9 Gifts of the Holy Spirit 1

Living Life in a New Dimension:

a. Obtaining Power.
b. Producing Character.

The Purpose of the Gifts of the Spirit: (What God had in mind, when He ordained these special Gifts of the Holy Spirit upon the Church).

  1. To Manifest the Body of Christ on the Earth: (1 Cor 12:12-14, 22)

We are called the Church, the Body of Christ.  While Christ walked the Earth, He was able to be at one place at one time, only. Thus He could only minister to a few people at a time.  Jesus actually only began His ministry when He ascended to the right hand side of God the Father.  The Holy Spirit was thus poured out upon “all flesh”, so that Christ might manifest Himself through an unlimited number of believers. Thus we have become the extension of Gods hand upon the Earth. Christ as the Head controlling the functions of His body on the Earth, through the moving of the Holy Spirit.

  1. To assist in the Evangelization of the World: (Mark 16:15-18)

Evangelism is not done through gimmicks or gadgets but by the accompanying of signs and wonders, which will manifest themselves through the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. The manifestations of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, confirms the Gospel to the Pagan, demonstrating God power on the Earth today.

  1. To Edify the Church: (1 Cor 14:3,12,26)

A number of the Gifts are for the Edifying of the Body, to build it up and strengthen it. It is a means through which God can communicate with His Body as a whole, fitly joined together in Spirit and Truth. (Tongues, Interpretation, Prophecy)

  1. For the Deliverance of Gods People:

As in the Old Testament, God used supernatural means of deliverance, so it is today in His Body. Christ fed the 5000 and calmed the sea, so today the word of Wisdom, the word of Knowledge, Gifts of healing, working of Miracles, and the Gift of Faith.

  1. For the Perfecting of the Saints: (Eph 4:11-14)

The 5 fold ministry has been given in order that we all come in unity of Faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. Thus they introduced order and discipline into the Body.

The Difference between the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, (1 Cor 12:8-10) and the Ministries (1 Cor 12:28-30): The Gifts or Manifestations of the Holy Spirit are supernatural Gifts resident in the person of the Holy Spirit, which may be distributed through various persons. The reason for the two worded terminology, is because:

a) It is the Manifestation of the Holy Spirit through the ministering party and
b) It is the Gift to the recipient who is being ministered to.

Thus any person baptized in the Holy Spirit can be used as an instrument, through which, all of these gifts may manifest.  These Gifts should not be confused with the 5 fold ministry placed in the body, which must be filled by various individuals, whom the Holy Spirit chooses.

OBTAINING POWER: (John 14:12 Greater Works than Jesus)

Operating by Love:
(Eph 4:16) The Body of Christ, if it is joined and firmly knit together, in “Unity”, of  “One Accord”, under one Lord, One Headship, One Spirit, working together, will grow to full maturity, by building itself up in Love. (1 Cor 12:1-31) Paul describes the working of the Body fitly joined together, manifesting the Gifts of the Spirit, and says earnestly desire and zealously cultivate the greatest, and best, the higher gifts and the choicest graces, but goes on to say, a better and higher way, far above all the Gifts, is the operation of Love. (1 Cor 13:1-3) Without Love, you are only a noisy gong or a clanging symbol. If you operate in the Power of the Holy Spirit, and do great works, but do not have Love, You are nothing, a Nobody. For only Faith, Hope and Love will abide forever and the greatest of these, is Love.

The Revelation Gifts:
The Word of wisdom.
The Word of Knowledge.
The Discerning of Spirits.

The Power Gifts:
The Gift of Faith.
The Working of Miracles.
The Gifts of Healings.

The Inspiration Gifts:
Divers kinds of tongues.
Interpretation of tongues.

NB!! There is no sharp definition one from another in the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, they emerge from one into another, as the spectrum of a rainbow. When the Holy Spirit manifests Himself, two or more Gifts may be in operation at the same time. (1 Cor 12:31 Covert the Best Gift)

Differences of Administrations and Operations: (1 Cor 12:5-7)

Every person through whom the Holy Spirit may manifest Himself, will Administrate and Operate according to their abilities, talents, and temperament.  (1 Cor 14:32)  The Spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. Note that this is not Gods Holy Spirit, but the hands of the prophet.  Paul explains that much depends on the prophet for the manner in which the Gift is manifested, for its timing, and for its proper exercise.  (1 Cor 14:23-32)   Our job is to stir up the gift that is in us, if we have been called by God to do a work. (2 Tim 1:6) and those who are not in the ministry (Rom 12:6) but move according to the grace that is given to us, let them move proportionately to their faith.

There are three kinds of Wisdom:

  1. The Wisdom of Satan. (James 3:14-16) (Eze 28:12,17)
  2. The Wisdom of Man. (Luke 14:28-32) (Ecc 1:16-18) Solomon in pursuit of human wisdom, according to his testimony, left him in a state of soul emptiness and vexation.
  3. The Wisdom of the Spiritual Man. (1 Cor 2:6)  Enables men to make true judgments. This wisdom is not pertaining to the word of wisdom needed for our daily living,  (James 1:5) and should be asked in Faith.

The word of wisdom then, is the Wisdom of God.  Jesus used the word of wisdom, when the Pharisees caught a woman in the act of adultery and brought her to Jesus. Jesus simply said, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.” When the Pharisees asked Jesus, “is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not ?”  Jesus asked who’s head was on the coin, and said, “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are Gods”.  (Math 22:17-21)  (1 Kings 3:16-28)  Solomon by the word of wisdom, solved the decision of the two harlots with the baby, both claiming it to be theirs.  Thus the word of wisdom is the active, supernatural agent by which either natural or spiritual wisdom may be imparted to Gods people.

(1 Cor 8:1) Knowledge of itself puffs up, but Love edifies.  This knowledge is not the word of knowledge, but rather human knowledge, the process of education.  The word of knowledge, operates to produce Faith in people’s hearts for healing, to inform of Impending judgment to reveal the secrets of men

(1 Cor 14:25). To give encouragement to discouraged prophet (James 5:17) and (1 Kings 19:18). To recall forgotten knowledge  (Dan 2:1-13).  To convert a sinner  (John 14:16-18).

Samuel possessed remarkable manifestations of this Gift.  (1 Sam 9:16)  He told where the asses may be found. Ananias (Acts 9:11,12) was told where Paul was and what to do about his blindness, so that he might recover his sight.  (2 Kings 3:15)  While a minstrel played, the word of knowledge came to Elijah, and he told Jehoshaphat how to go about obtaining water in the valley.(Acts 5) Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Holy Spirit, Peter exercised the word of knowledge and they died.

NB!! Notice that , “a great fear came upon all the Church, and upon as many as heard these things.” This was the righteous fear of the Lord and caused the people to walk Holy and upright before the Lord, thus forcing out strife and envy and pride.

There are three realms of  Faith:

  1. (Rom 12:3) God has dealt each of us “the measure of Faith”. This is natural Faith, in which we are able to believe in Him. (2 Thess 1:3) Note that their Faith was growing, as will ours if we feed on the word of God.
  2. (Gal 5:22) The “Fruit of Faith” or Faithfulness.
  3. (Mark 11) The Gift of Faith. Where Jesus cursed the fig tree, He did it by the Gift of Faith, (i.e.) Gods Faith. It is the Faith that Spoke the Universe into existence.

Elijah calling fire out of heaven showed the Gift of Faith.  (1 Kings 18:20-40).  The centurion whose servant was dying, (Math 8:5-13) said, “speak the word”.  The three

Hebrew children, Daniel in the Lions den, Phillip being transported by the Holy Spirit.

NB!! The difference between the gift of Faith and the working miracles, is the gift of Faith is passive, while the working of miracles is active. (2 Kings 1:10)  Elijah called for

the working of miracles in order to prove he was a man of  God.

When the Gifts of Healings are in operation, it is not essential that the sick person himself has faith.

Methods of Administering Divine Healing:

  1. Personal Prayer (James 5:13)
  2. The Laying of Hands (Mark 16:17,18)
  3. The command of Faith (Math 8:16,17)
  4. The spoken Word (Math 8:8)
  5. An Anointed Cloth (Mark 6:56)
  6. An Act of Faith (2 Kings 5:14) (Luke 17:14)
  7. The Anointing of the Elders (James 5:14,15)

Different Gifts of healing are needed for different kinds of diseases and sicknesses. This may be of:

  1. A Natural cause.
  2. A Supernatural cause, such as a demon or evil, Spirit manifesting itself.

Thus deliverance is needed in order to get to the root of the problem.  (Math 8:16)  A demon may take possession of the auditory and optical nerves, paralyzing them in such a way that they are unable to function.  Thus a person would not in a sense need healing, but deliverance which would inaugurate the healing. A person must then be taught how to keep their healing, for the demon will try to take possession of that body once again.

Most miracles can be classified into these groups:

  1. Miracles of Supply.
  2. Miracles of Raising the Dead.
  3. Miracles of Judgment.
  4. Miracles of Deliverance.
  5. Miracles of Overruling Nature.
  6. Miracles of Healing, thus creative in their nature.

Notice the 10 helpers who were healed by Jesus, the one that returned to thank Him was made whole. (i.e.) The Leprosy left the others, but this man had his fingers and toes restored to His body. The raising of Lazarus from the dead, (John 11) (Luke 8) and Jarius’s daughter. Peter was also sent out by the Lord to go and catch a fish, and Peter found the coin in the mouth of the fish.(Math 17:24-27)

NB!! Although a miracle is supernatural in its source, it has been done naturally, by  Nature or some other material thing. Thus we are then able to see the hand of God, working the miracle, and not that it was a mere coincidence of timing.

The discerning of  Spirits is a supernatural enablement, permitting identification of the nature and character of Spirits, seen and unseen. (i.e.)

  1. Angel Spirits.
  2. Demons or Satanic Spirits.
  3. Human Spirits.
  4. The Spirit of God.

It is not the ability to see faults in others.  It is not mind reading or anything to do with spiritist phenomena or related to psychiatry.  Thus it is to see within the spirit world, to discern evil spirits, to discern evil and hypocrisy among  Gods people.

NB!! Many times people who prophecy will be moved by their human spirit, it is then that the discerning of spirits should operate to keep order in the body.

Jesus turned to Peter and said, “get thee behind me Satan,” (Math 16:23) Paul discerned an evil spirit in a woman who was following them around.  (Acts 16:16-18) Jesus discerned the affliction on the woman bowed over for 18 years to be the work of  Satan.  (Luke 3:16).

Not to be confused with the ministry of a prophet.  (1 Cor 14:3)  This Gift is for Edification, Exhortation, Comfort, and brings conviction to the sinner.  Prophecy can also be brought forth in song.  Note once again this prophecy is done proportionally to the person’s level of Faith.  Everybody may prophecy one by one. (1 Cor 14:38) and we should all covert it earnestly.

  1. Edification: To build up or improve. Thus a Psalm or Psalms, in praise and worship will edify the body.
  2. Exhortation: Means to incite by words or advice, to encourage, warn or caution. It may include a rebuke, but it is not cold, dry, and callous.
  3. Comfort: Not sympathy. Thus they receive counsel from the Lord. The word will comfort people in any situation, and keep them victorious.

NB!! Prophecy will reveal the secrets of men’s hearts, but it will not condemn, or judge, but produce a response towards God, one of Praise and worship, and reinstate a person to fellow shipping with the Lord.

  1. DIVERS KINDS OF TONGUES:4 Main Reasons for Tongues:
    As Evidence. (Acts 2:4)
    For Interpretation. (1 Cor 12:11)
    A Sign for Unbelievers. (1 Cor 14:22)
    Private Edification. (1 Cor 14:14)

There is a tongue for the believer in fellowship with other believers, that needs to be interpreted, and there is a tongue for building yourself up in your most holy Faith, (Jude 1:20) for private devotion.  While prophecy is a sign to the Pagan, tongues is a sign to the unbelieving Christian.  While speaking in tongues, you  may be speaking in another language, and thus directly to the heart of the unbelieving Christian, who is in bondage to the devil, and does not believe that God is the same yesterday, today and forever. On the other hand, God may give him the interpretation.

NB!! Thus the baptism in the Holy Spirit is signified by the speaking in diverse kinds of Tongues as was the day of Pentecost, when they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other tongues. (Acts 2:4)

The Interpretation is not usually a translation.  Thus the length of time may differ. If tongues are spoken there must be an interpreter, otherwise one of the people speaking in tongues should pray and ask for the interpretation.

Prophecy is better if there is not an interpreter, but if there is, then tongues is better, for our spirit making contact with God and thus there is less room for the human spirit to be involved.  The Interpreter then has to know the mind of God, thus notifying the “oracle” of the Holy Spirit.

NB!! Be careful of people who interpret the same way time after time. That could be the Human Spirit, that is manifesting itself. A person who interprets may go over into prophecy, if he does, then be careful to judge what is being said, and do not write if off as the interpretation of the tongues. Let your spirit bear witness with what is being said.
